Saturday and Sunday
18 holes with cart $25 April Special The Airways Players Club will start play on May 1st.
See more info on league news page. We will finally be able to let carts off the path with the exception of
3,4,14 and wherever else roped or marked. Please obey normal cart rules of returning to path at white cart lines. Auction of rounds at New England golf courses to support turf research at several universities is this week.
See details in earlier news. Airways 9 starts Monday. Hooray! We will open the original 9 holes on Sunday.
Paved cart paths only! Be forewarned course has spots that are still very wet. Due to already wet conditions, another 1 1/2" of rain this week and more rain predicted for tonight we are sorry to inform you that we have to delay opening this weekend. The next 2 days of warmer weather are promising, and we hope to be opening 9 holes for Monday with cart path only rules.
Please call ahead as we are still at mother nature's mercy and these are still only our intentions. Thank you for your patience. We want to be open too! The spring melt always brings out the question why can't we golf once the snow is gone. We want to open as quickly as possible also, but can't overlook the damage that can be caused by opening too early. I will try to explain our reasoning to help you understand. Even as the surface snow disappears the frost is still in the ground. As the frost line creeps deeper from the surface of the ground the water is trapped in the top layer of the soil. This creates a slippery and destructive condition for the turf. Traffic during this time can leave footprints and tears that take months to recover. As soon as the frost disappears from the soil the water can percolate down and almost instantly change the surface structure. We monitor the frost in the soil very often (sometimes every hour as it starts to improve) and determine when we can roll the green to accept traffic. In the following photos I will try to show how this progression works. This is the only green to reach this firmness. I expect to have much better news for next week!
Keep checking as we will post progress. |
